Behold, the power of google.

What is that they say?  There are 6 degrees of separation?  Let’s see if I can get this right.

Not long after I opened up for business here in Austin my client “J” found me via google and hired me to photograph their newborn daughter.  Some time later, another future client “S” also found me via google and hired me to photograph the birth of her 3rd child, also a girl.  6 or so months later, J asks me to work on a fundraiser with them to benefit a family whose little boy has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.  As J started to tell me about sweet little Timmy I just couldn’t say no and dove in.  We did several sessions with Timmy and his family, including one at their home.  It turns out that their good friends and neighbors are related to my other client, “S”!  Small world, right?!  To make it even more awesome, when I put a session up for auction last year at the fundraiser, the neighbors/friends bought it!  Pretty cool right?  I guess the crazy part is that I don’t really get that many of my clients through google.  A few, but not the majority.  I just don’t pay that much attention to google ranking (I know I should, please don’t yell at me….)and really have no clue where I even fall so the fact that people find me that way always surprises me a little and makes me smile.  I think this sweet family was destined to find me one way or the other 😉  And I loved getting to photograph their newest edition, baby #4….

Congrats you guys, it has been great to get to know you!  I hope you love your photos and thank you again for your donation to help Cure Duchenne!

they make my heart smile

So filled with love and grace and their hearts are just so, so big.  I first met them last year as a part of a fundraiser with Mack & Sally Brown to benefit Cure Duchenne.  I was lucky enough to get to help tell their story last year and am honored to do so again this year.  We’ll be doing a photo shoot in a few months to prepare for the big event.  Seeing them again tonight was meant just to capture a few fun and easy family shots before the holidays and it made my heart smile.  Timmy is 7, just lost a front tooth, is so energetic, curious, busy!  Andrew has grown from a toddler to just the sweetest little boy.  I am so thankful to have this family in my life.  As we have gone through a tough 6 months with Teagan being sick, they have been supportive, prayerful and have sent thoughtful messages to us.  One just last week reminded me to “take it one day at a time and love him as God created him” and it came at just the right time, exactly what my heart needed to hear, what a huge blessing.  We haven’t been through nearly what they have faced, they certainly understand where we are with Teagan and know the pain of facing a challenge with the health of your child in a huge way.  I hope they know we are holding their family in prayer, just as they have ours.  I had to give up and put aside most of my charity work when Teagan got sick, but this family is just one I couldn’t let go of and had to make work.  I needed to see them, give them big hugs, play with the boys and capture photos that show just how beautiful they all are. I will continue to do so and I will help in any way that I can to help them find the cure so many boys with DMD need.

Tim is preparing to run his 6th(!!!!) Austin marathon in Timmy’s honor!  If you’d like to support him in raising money to fight for Timmy’s life, you can do so here.  I will be posting more information about the event this spring with Mack, Sally and Champions to Cure Duchenne as we get closer!

ps.  Timmy, thank you for the special gift you gave me tonight.  I let Taryn and Teagan play with our new Seagull frog tonight and they love him.  Tomorrow I’m going to take him back and put him in a place of honor in my office to remind me every single day what a special little boy you are and how very blessed I am to know you and your family.

NEW WEBSITE: for IAPBP | Find A Birth Photographer

I am so excited to share this with you!  This has been a work in progress for months and months.  I’ve known this was something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.  And now, with the help of my very technically skilled husband, it is finally ready!  Be sure to scroll down for a quick Q&A!

What is

It is a resource for parents.  Expectant parents who are looking for a birth photographer in their area.  It is a tool for photographers.  We can now bridge the gap between the people who want a birth photographer and the professionals who provide the service!  I’ve felt the need for this for SO long.  I get TONS of emails asking if I know somewhere in California, Michigan, just about every single state, every single week, sometimes daily!  Emails from women who desperately want their birth documented but they can’t find anyone to hire.  There are days I have a few minutes to help parents track down someone, but many days, with a busy business and three crazy kids, I just didn’t have the extra time.  Simply put, brings parents and photographers together!

What does IAPBP stand for?

International Association of Professional Birth Photographers

But wait, didn’t you already have a directory through your mentoring program and The Birth Experience?

Yes, but it was for members of my mentoring program only.  Looking at the bigger picture, not all birth photographers have a need, or perhaps the means, to be mentored and memberships were limited.  The Directory at is open to all photographers across the world.

What else does provide?

First and foremost, it is a Directory for parents to find a photographer in their area.  We also created a blog (yes, I will be blogging even more!) where I will post birth related articles.  We will have guest bloggers including doulas, midwives and other birth professionals posting on a wide range of topics.  There are several articles that I am writing on the ins and outs of hiring a professional birth photographer, and there is a detailed Resource Center that can help you find a midwife, doula or birth center in your area.  You will also find a suggested reading list!

What is a Feature on

We will feature one birth photographer each month (it may become more frequent based on traffic).  Each feature includes an interview and images linked from the front page.  Emily Weaver Brown is our first featured birth photographer this month.  Check it out!  Once you are a member of IAPBP and your listing is active in the directory you can apply to be a Featured Photographer by filling out THIS FORM.

Features aren’t just for photographers though, we are also asking moms to submit their birth stories to be posted on the blog.  Who doesn’t love a good birth story?!  I sure do!!  We are looking for birth stories of every shape, size and variety.  We know each one is unique and can’t wait to hear all about yours.  If you are a mom with a birth story you want to share, you can send it to us HERE.

Is there a fee for parents to search the directory?

No.  It is 100% free.

Is there a fee for photographers to be added to the directory?

Yes, there is a small, one time fee of $10 to set up your listing and help defray the costs of running the site, hosting, etc.  This is not an annual fee.

What if I sign up and later change my business name or website address?  Will I be charged for a new listing?

No.  Just email me your new information and we’ll get your listing updated right away.

How long will it take for my listing to appear on once I pay?

I do my best to get them up as quickly as possible.  It should never take more than 48 hours.  Many times it will be much faster than that, but I am giving myself 48 hours just in case I am off photographing a birth.  If you don’t see it within 48 hours please email me at [email protected]

I am a photographer in Austin, can I be listed in the directory?

Of course!

Will you provide a logo to put on my site to show that I am a member of IAPBP?

Yes, it will be sent to you via email once your listing in the directory is posted.

Can I subscribe to the RSS feed for the new blog?

Yes, click here for the RSS feed link.

Is and IAPBP on Facebook?

Yes, you can see the fan page here.

If you have any other questions please post them in the comments, I’d love to hear from you.  I truly hope that this site is an amazing resource for parents and photographers that results in many births being documented!

Now go look at it already, I’m excited!! | austin charity photographer

It’s almost time, I’ve also been tying up loose ends with the Dealing for Duchenne fundraiser that is this coming up Saturday at the UT Golf Club.  I know Julie and the other co-chairs have been working so hard to get ready and it’s going to be SO worth it!  It’s not too late to get your tickets, it’s going to be an awesome night, famous people, casino gambling, an auction, all for a great cause!  I am donating a full session to the silent auction, I can’t wait to see who wins it!!  More than anything, I can’t wait to see Tim, Laura, Timmy and Andrew surrounded by love and people helping them make a huge step toward finding a cure for Duchenne.

Tim sent me some great links for some of the media that has been covering the event.  Check it out:

Radio interview Tim did on 104.9 the Horn

And here’s Julie and Kristen on TV this morning.

Sally Brown’s Radio Interview from today.

KEYE is airing a sweet story with Mrs. Sally Brown, Mrs. Julie Applewhite and Timothy tomorrow during the 4pm hour.

There is also a feature on the cover of West Austin News, if you see one, pick it up!

Jason, Ty and I will be going to the event while my mom stays with the littles, super excited!

full circle | austin baby photographer

I can’t believe that these two are already one!  Wow.  It’s always a blast catching up with this family!  I’m pretty sure their love of the camera has something to do with their momma.  If you read her blog, you know they are certainly not under photographed!  I’ve been lucky enough to get to photograph them several times during their first year.  It still makes me weepy to look at these, I really love these and I’ll never stop thinking of them as Gilligan & Skipper!  But really, could Cooper and Spencer be any cuter?  I think not….

And I have to share this….mid session I had the idea to recreate this pose from their newborn session….only well…uhm….yeeeeeaah.  I think this is the perfect time to say “Oh what a difference a year makes!!!!!”  HA!

Real life IS worth photographing 😉
