Mini Session Giveaway!

Have a ton of photos of the kids?

Are you always behind the camera?

When was the last time you had a photo of just you and your honey?

Your wedding?  Been awhile huh?

It is one of the most valuable and important relationships in your life.

Your love, all the fun you have, should be captured.

Want a chance to win a mini session for just you and your sweetheart?!?!

YES!

Ok, here is the deal.  I have been mentoring an amazing group of ladies online for the last year as a part of The Birth Experience and we are planning a fun little get together in February.  I am so excited to meet these women in person.  I can’t wait to work together, play around Austin, talk shop and just hang out with them. I thought it would be a lot of fun to go out shooting at night as a group, cause, you know, birth photographers LOVE shooting in the dark!  For the photographer, these night sessions are creative, fun and off the charts technically challenging!  Which I love.  So, that is just what we’re going to do.

Now, we need a couple.

A FUN, HAPPY, IN LOVE, DESERVING, couple.

That’s where you come in.  Your job will be to hop around downtown Austin after dark, have fun, laugh, cuddle with your honey and basically pretend you’re on a really hot date.  You may have to listen to us talk a bit about boring old photography mumbo jumbo and a few technicalities, but I promise, you’ll have a blast.  The best part, you get to walk away with some amazing photos after a fun night out on the town! And hey guys, how fun would it be to surprise your wife/girlfriend with a fun session as a gift for Valentines Day?!

How to enter:

  • You must be available after 4 pm in downtown Austin, Texas on February 26, 2011.  You do not have to be an Austin resident, you just have to be willing to get yourself here on that date and time.
  • You can only enter for yourself, not someone else.  If you think someone else is perfect and deserving, forward them this link and they can enter!
  • All entries MUST be emailed to lstradtner@mac.com before midnight on January 21, 2010 with the subject line of “giveaway”.
  • You must include the most fun photo you have of the two of you together.  Out of focus and blurry snapshots taken with monkey arms totally count.  If you don’t have a photo, take one.
  • Tell me WHY you are fun, happy, in love and deserving.  I want to hear a funny story or how he makes you laugh or about the funny way she dances.  Something that makes you smile.

The fine print:

Winner will be chosen and notified on January 22, 2010.  Sorry, no cash value.  Winners will be asked to sign a portrait agreement for Life in Motion and model releases for each photographer present for use in marketing, portfolio or as otherwise stated in the model releases.  The only guaranteed images the models will receive will be from Life in Motion Photography and normal mini session policies apply.  Mini session shall include a gallery of images that participants can choose 5 full resolution images to be included on a disk with print release.  Additional purchases can be made but are not required.  Email lstradtner@mac.com for further mini details and policies.  The other photographers in attendance may present photos to you at their discretion.  One entry per person only.

Sorry, Austin photographers are not eligible to enter the giveaway.  However, we will be organizing a meet and greet that weekend and we’d love to have any local photographers join us for that!  If you’d like more info on the meet and greet please email me and I’ll forward you as details come together!

the birth of annslee | austin birth photographer, the birth experience

She arrived and was welcomed by a family so filled with love. She’s a very lucky girl. When I look through the images, it hits me how happy everyone was that day. And joyful.  And thankful.  You can see it on their faces, each and every one of them.  I love that. And I’m thankful to have been there to document it. I love mom’s tears in her eyes as she sees her baby for the first time.  And the gaze from dad over to mom with a smile as he holds their daughter for the first time.  I’m always so impressed when first time moms hire a birth photographer, I know that they will never know the pain of forgetting one of the biggest days of their life.  I know that pain….I thought I wouldn’t forget….but all those little details are diminishing over time.  But not this family, they can relive that day any time they want by viewing their slideshow or going through their images, and I love that.  As all of these babies that I’ve photographed coming into this world grow up, I seriously can’t wait to hear what they think about it!

This birth was also my first opportunity to meet the infamous Austin Area OB, Dr. Seeker. He has a reputation here in Austin for having an amazing bedside manner and I think you’ll see in the images that he truly loves what he does. It shows, there is no denying it. I can now understand fully why his patients adore him so much.

BIRTH SLIDESHOW: THE BIRTH OF ANNSLEE

baby girl | austin home birth photographer

I had the honor of photographing another home birth yesterday and there were not one, but two firsts for me.  One, this is the very first birth I’ve photographed where the baby arrived on the actual due date!  And, believe it or not, this is the first birth I’ve photographed where the family would be surprised by the gender, believe it or not.  I had to really stop and think back through all the births I’ve photographed over the years and I do believe this is the first surprise baby.  And surprised they were!  I LOVED that moment of realizing that with 4 sons, they now have a daughter.  This momma worked so hard for her baby, it was a long, hard labor, but the reward was absolutely amazing….

Congratulations T Family, I can’t wait to hear the final name choice!

a photography tip, flat taryn | austin child photographer

My kids have PCS (photographer child syndrome).  Bad.  It’s much harder to get shots of them because they know my tricks.  They know the game and many days, they just don’t want to play.  I have to be on my toes a lot, and I know many photographers and moms know the feeling.  But guess what?  PCS, it’s not just for photographers kids, its for their friends too.  Tis true.  Exhibit A:  Lily, Taryn’s BFF.  I first photographed her at 18 months old and since then, well, she’s kind of gotten over me and my camera shanigans.  My old die hard tricks don’t even crack the surface.  And with their family session coming up soon, I wracked my brain thinking of ways to capture her.  This was to be a fun, big family session for our dear friends as Jack is at that prime time fave age of 6 months, chubby, happy, (fairly) immobile.  6 month olds rock because they are in that last phase before they can get away from me and separate anxiety hasn’t quite hit yet.  I knew I could get Jack, he likes me and loves the camera.  But Lil would give me a run for my money.  So….thought process….what does Lil love?  What makes her laugh?  Easy, Taryn.  No, not bringing Taryn, that would be bad and distracting.  What’s the next best thing?

Enter Flat Taryn.

You’ve heard of Flat Stanley right?  Yup, same concept.  So I taped a photo of Taryn’s head to a big popsicle stick.   Huge hit.  Lily loved Flat Taryn, carried her all around.  I would hold my camera and shoot with one hand and hold Flat Taryn in the other.  I’d hold it so that she was inbetween my face and the camera and then pop her up to peek at Lily, opening up my view through the viewfinder and she’d look and laugh.  Sometimes Taryn would “talk” to her or make funny noises.  Worked like a charm since when Taryn was raised, I could see through the viewfinder and she was just above the line of my lens and it looks like Lily was looking and smiling right at me….see:

Bwahahaha….got her!  And photogs, if you ask what your clients are “into” right now, favorite character, etc., you could easily put elmo, diego, a princess or buzz on a stick!  Cheap and easy trick to have in your back pocket!!

Now, a certain chubby, fun loving little 6 month old, he was a bit weirded out by Flat Taryn.  He liked my quacking like a duck noises a lot better….

I don’t blame him, I am a pretty good duck if I do say so myself 🙂

the birth experience, a guide for the birth photographer | austin birth photographer

THE BIRTH EXPERIENCE – MEMBERSHIP IS OPEN AS OF TODAY.

I am jump up and down excited that it is finally time!  It has been over a year in the making and I can’t wait to get started!!

birthexperience logo

Each membership includes:

You get everything I do, every last step, written out in The Guide.  The Birth Experience Guide is a 35 page document that I spent over a year writing.  It’s packed full of information and images covering topics such as scheduling, pricing, technical aspects, client communication, lighting, equipment, the birth support team, special considerations, emergency situations, the big moment, the baby,  my step by step workflow, presentation, marketing ideas & more!  You’ll also receive a copy of the birth contract I use.

I wanted this program to be more than a guide.  I wanted to offer continued learning.  And a way for birth photographers to connect and learn and share.  Each membership gives you full access to ask me birth related questions until February 1, 2011 on the forum.  Anything that comes up, anything you can think of, I’m all ears, there to help.  I will be on the forum DAILY.  I have committed myself to spending no less than 5 hours per week on the forum answering questions and participating, but it will likely be much more than that.

Additionally, each member will be listed in the Member Directory to aid expecting parents in finding a birth photographer in their area.  I love this part because I get so many emails from expecting parents across the country asking if I know anyone in their area who does birth photography.  Now I can say YES, here is a list!

Who will find this mentoring program the most beneficial?  This program has something for everyone.  The Guide is geared towards those just starting their birth photography business or those who are looking to streamline the process.  Experienced birth photographers will find the forum to be a wonderful resource for networking, support, obtaining marketing ideas and continued learning amongst some of the best birth photographers around.

Please note that only those outside of a 60 mile radius of Austin and the surrounding areas are eligible.  We already have members from across the US, in Canada & Austrailia!

Want to find out more? Look here: Member BenefitsFrequently Asked QuestionsApply for Membership

I would also like to thank my wonderful, supportive and incredibly helpful Charter Members.  They have provided their insight, advice and experiences and I am so thankful for each of them!

  • Emily Weaver Brown in Seattle.  Emily has a lot of experience with birth centers and natural child birth.  She is also very, very knowledgeable on the process and stages of birth.
  • Jodie Allen of Fresh Art Photography in St. Louis.  Jodie  has experience in several areas of birth photography, including being inside the OR for c-sections.  She also has extensive experience in working with organizations that offer newborn bereavement photography services to families.  Jodie brings compassion, knowledge and a side of “tell it like it is” to the table!
  • Lynsey Stone out of Dallas.  Lynsey devotes her entire business to photographing births.  Having photographed over 90 birth experiences, her experience is unparalleled in the industry.

Thank you ladies for all your help over the last few weeks!  You girls rock!!

ETA: The first 20 spots filled up fast this morning after I emailed out the info to those on the waiting list.  I decided to take on 20 to start just to be sure I didn’t get overwhelmed with the process of getting everyone set up.  Good news is that everything is running smoothly with the first group and I am going to keep membership open.  I will process applications as quickly as I can as they come in, please bear with me.  Thanks!
