Jack turns 1

Alternate title:  Holy moly did that go by fast!

One.  I can’t believe it has been almost a year.  I think I’m in denial *almost* as much as his momma.  He’s had an awesome first year and it has been a joy to watch and capture as Lily became a great big sister and two of our dearest friends embraced parenting one of the sweetest little boys ever.  He’s going to be off and running and keeping up with the big kids any day now.  So hard to believe since it feels like this was just the other day.  Alli and I snuck out of the house bright and early this morning (much to both Taryn & Lily’s dismay – they both just *knew* the other one was going and they were missing something cool) to go exploring and take some photos of little man for his birthday.  We found the motherload of cool locations and I can’t wait to go back there and shoot again!

We had high hopes with the smash cake.  I think you can tell, he was NOT all that impressed with the mess, but that surely didn’t stop him from eating it!  HA!

LOL!  His birthday will be here before we know it (which means mine is coming up too – yikes!)….congratulations Mike, Alli & Lily on making it through the first year.  I can’t wait to see all the joy, love and laughter he brings in his 2nd year!  Love you guys!

some of our favorite people | austin family photographer

I love….that our lives are so intertwined that when I go to look for a photo of one of them, I always have to stop and think about whether it’s mixed in with my family photos or in their “client” folder…..

I love….that my children and theirs are at their happiest when they are together, no matter what they are doing…..

I love…..the little girl giggles and the dress up and the play dates and the long girly telephone calls and the constant scheming to be together.

I love…..that they will grow up and never remember a day that they weren’t friends….

I love…..that we have friends we can count on, no matter what.  A couple like us, that puts their family first, that laughs and loves with their whole hearts…..

I love…..that he’s totally smitten with his momma, and her with him.

I love…..getting to watch him grow up.  From the day his mommy told us she was pregnant, to finding out he’s a boy, to the day of his birth.

I love…..seeing Lil grow from a toddler to a beautiful little girl and amazing big sister.

I love…..that I can call Alli once every 3 weeks or once every 3 hours and it’s always a conversation filled with laughter, a few vents and one of us darting off the phone because someone puked, pooped or destroyed something. And we can always pick up right where we left off…..

I love…..that I have such a wonderful mother as a friend.  Someone to share the triumphs and challenges of motherhood with.  Someone who I bounce everything from asthma to sleep to ear tubes to every other “is this normal or is my kid a freak” question off of and she always listens and relates.

I love…..really, really love chunky little guys with big blue eyes in ties.

I love…..saying the words “man date” in front of the husbands, just to watch them both get all huffy.  Man dates usually consist of guy movies Alli and I wouldn’t see if you paid us, after the kids have long been in bed.  While it’s fun to give them a hard time….I’m so thankful Jase has someone to hang out with (and that I no longer have to go to dumb shoot em up guy movies, whew!).

I love…..and cannot believe that he is (more than) a half of a year old already.

I love…..this.  Big time.

I love….that it was this blog that first connected our families.  Their friendship is the greatest thing blogging has ever given me.  All of us moving from separate states, turning in to neighbors and then dear friends.  Love em!

a photography tip, flat taryn | austin child photographer

My kids have PCS (photographer child syndrome).  Bad.  It’s much harder to get shots of them because they know my tricks.  They know the game and many days, they just don’t want to play.  I have to be on my toes a lot, and I know many photographers and moms know the feeling.  But guess what?  PCS, it’s not just for photographers kids, its for their friends too.  Tis true.  Exhibit A:  Lily, Taryn’s BFF.  I first photographed her at 18 months old and since then, well, she’s kind of gotten over me and my camera shanigans.  My old die hard tricks don’t even crack the surface.  And with their family session coming up soon, I wracked my brain thinking of ways to capture her.  This was to be a fun, big family session for our dear friends as Jack is at that prime time fave age of 6 months, chubby, happy, (fairly) immobile.  6 month olds rock because they are in that last phase before they can get away from me and separate anxiety hasn’t quite hit yet.  I knew I could get Jack, he likes me and loves the camera.  But Lil would give me a run for my money.  So….thought process….what does Lil love?  What makes her laugh?  Easy, Taryn.  No, not bringing Taryn, that would be bad and distracting.  What’s the next best thing?

Enter Flat Taryn.

You’ve heard of Flat Stanley right?  Yup, same concept.  So I taped a photo of Taryn’s head to a big popsicle stick.   Huge hit.  Lily loved Flat Taryn, carried her all around.  I would hold my camera and shoot with one hand and hold Flat Taryn in the other.  I’d hold it so that she was inbetween my face and the camera and then pop her up to peek at Lily, opening up my view through the viewfinder and she’d look and laugh.  Sometimes Taryn would “talk” to her or make funny noises.  Worked like a charm since when Taryn was raised, I could see through the viewfinder and she was just above the line of my lens and it looks like Lily was looking and smiling right at me….see:

Bwahahaha….got her!  And photogs, if you ask what your clients are “into” right now, favorite character, etc., you could easily put elmo, diego, a princess or buzz on a stick!  Cheap and easy trick to have in your back pocket!!

Now, a certain chubby, fun loving little 6 month old, he was a bit weirded out by Flat Taryn.  He liked my quacking like a duck noises a lot better….

I don’t blame him, I am a pretty good duck if I do say so myself 🙂

eat your heart out | austin baby photographer

Teagan’s best bud Jack is about to be on the move and ready to hang with the big kids (Taryn, Lily & Teagan)….it won’t be long now!  The chub, the blue eyes, the faux hawk.  Man I love that kid, he’s just so dreamy.  And doesn’t it seem like yesterday Teagan was all curled up on the heart rug, fresh out of the hospital?!

Also, I have a few spots open in time for Valentines Day, if you’re interested, drop me an email at [email protected]!

the 5 minute photo shoot | austin baby photographer

Just a few of Jack from a little 5 minute impromptu photo shoot  the other day.  I stopped by Alli’s to pick up Taryn from a playdate with Lily and Mr. Chubbers was getting his diaper changed.  I can’t resist his chub….so I ran out to my car and grabbed my camera.

I’ve craved and yearned for a shot like that of one of my 3 and never got it.  And uhm, would you look at those thighs?!  Yummy!

the chub and the drool….oh be still my heart

Can you believe he’s 6 months old already?!  His 6 month session with his beautiful family was supposed to be this weekend but it’s just way too cold to brave it.  Soon though.  And oh yeah, his Dad turns 30 today, Happy Birthday Mike old man!
