Jack turns 1

Alternate title:  Holy moly did that go by fast!

One.  I can’t believe it has been almost a year.  I think I’m in denial *almost* as much as his momma.  He’s had an awesome first year and it has been a joy to watch and capture as Lily became a great big sister and two of our dearest friends embraced parenting one of the sweetest little boys ever.  He’s going to be off and running and keeping up with the big kids any day now.  So hard to believe since it feels like this was just the other day.  Alli and I snuck out of the house bright and early this morning (much to both Taryn & Lily’s dismay – they both just *knew* the other one was going and they were missing something cool) to go exploring and take some photos of little man for his birthday.  We found the motherload of cool locations and I can’t wait to go back there and shoot again!

We had high hopes with the smash cake.  I think you can tell, he was NOT all that impressed with the mess, but that surely didn’t stop him from eating it!  HA!

LOL!  His birthday will be here before we know it (which means mine is coming up too – yikes!)….congratulations Mike, Alli & Lily on making it through the first year.  I can’t wait to see all the joy, love and laughter he brings in his 2nd year!  Love you guys!

some of our favorite people | austin family photographer

I love….that our lives are so intertwined that when I go to look for a photo of one of them, I always have to stop and think about whether it’s mixed in with my family photos or in their “client” folder…..

I love….that my children and theirs are at their happiest when they are together, no matter what they are doing…..

I love…..the little girl giggles and the dress up and the play dates and the long girly telephone calls and the constant scheming to be together.

I love…..that they will grow up and never remember a day that they weren’t friends….

I love…..that we have friends we can count on, no matter what.  A couple like us, that puts their family first, that laughs and loves with their whole hearts…..

I love…..that he’s totally smitten with his momma, and her with him.

I love…..getting to watch him grow up.  From the day his mommy told us she was pregnant, to finding out he’s a boy, to the day of his birth.

I love…..seeing Lil grow from a toddler to a beautiful little girl and amazing big sister.

I love…..that I can call Alli once every 3 weeks or once every 3 hours and it’s always a conversation filled with laughter, a few vents and one of us darting off the phone because someone puked, pooped or destroyed something. And we can always pick up right where we left off…..

I love…..that I have such a wonderful mother as a friend.  Someone to share the triumphs and challenges of motherhood with.  Someone who I bounce everything from asthma to sleep to ear tubes to every other “is this normal or is my kid a freak” question off of and she always listens and relates.

I love…..really, really love chunky little guys with big blue eyes in ties.

I love…..saying the words “man date” in front of the husbands, just to watch them both get all huffy.  Man dates usually consist of guy movies Alli and I wouldn’t see if you paid us, after the kids have long been in bed.  While it’s fun to give them a hard time….I’m so thankful Jase has someone to hang out with (and that I no longer have to go to dumb shoot em up guy movies, whew!).

I love…..and cannot believe that he is (more than) a half of a year old already.

I love…..this.  Big time.

I love….that it was this blog that first connected our families.  Their friendship is the greatest thing blogging has ever given me.  All of us moving from separate states, turning in to neighbors and then dear friends.  Love em!

a photography tip, flat taryn | austin child photographer

My kids have PCS (photographer child syndrome).  Bad.  It’s much harder to get shots of them because they know my tricks.  They know the game and many days, they just don’t want to play.  I have to be on my toes a lot, and I know many photographers and moms know the feeling.  But guess what?  PCS, it’s not just for photographers kids, its for their friends too.  Tis true.  Exhibit A:  Lily, Taryn’s BFF.  I first photographed her at 18 months old and since then, well, she’s kind of gotten over me and my camera shanigans.  My old die hard tricks don’t even crack the surface.  And with their family session coming up soon, I wracked my brain thinking of ways to capture her.  This was to be a fun, big family session for our dear friends as Jack is at that prime time fave age of 6 months, chubby, happy, (fairly) immobile.  6 month olds rock because they are in that last phase before they can get away from me and separate anxiety hasn’t quite hit yet.  I knew I could get Jack, he likes me and loves the camera.  But Lil would give me a run for my money.  So….thought process….what does Lil love?  What makes her laugh?  Easy, Taryn.  No, not bringing Taryn, that would be bad and distracting.  What’s the next best thing?

Enter Flat Taryn.

You’ve heard of Flat Stanley right?  Yup, same concept.  So I taped a photo of Taryn’s head to a big popsicle stick.   Huge hit.  Lily loved Flat Taryn, carried her all around.  I would hold my camera and shoot with one hand and hold Flat Taryn in the other.  I’d hold it so that she was inbetween my face and the camera and then pop her up to peek at Lily, opening up my view through the viewfinder and she’d look and laugh.  Sometimes Taryn would “talk” to her or make funny noises.  Worked like a charm since when Taryn was raised, I could see through the viewfinder and she was just above the line of my lens and it looks like Lily was looking and smiling right at me….see:

Bwahahaha….got her!  And photogs, if you ask what your clients are “into” right now, favorite character, etc., you could easily put elmo, diego, a princess or buzz on a stick!  Cheap and easy trick to have in your back pocket!!

Now, a certain chubby, fun loving little 6 month old, he was a bit weirded out by Flat Taryn.  He liked my quacking like a duck noises a lot better….

I don’t blame him, I am a pretty good duck if I do say so myself 🙂

eat your heart out | austin baby photographer

Teagan’s best bud Jack is about to be on the move and ready to hang with the big kids (Taryn, Lily & Teagan)….it won’t be long now!  The chub, the blue eyes, the faux hawk.  Man I love that kid, he’s just so dreamy.  And doesn’t it seem like yesterday Teagan was all curled up on the heart rug, fresh out of the hospital?!

Also, I have a few spots open in time for Valentines Day, if you’re interested, drop me an email at lstradtner@mac.com!

the 5 minute photo shoot | austin baby photographer

Just a few of Jack from a little 5 minute impromptu photo shoot  the other day.  I stopped by Alli’s to pick up Taryn from a playdate with Lily and Mr. Chubbers was getting his diaper changed.  I can’t resist his chub….so I ran out to my car and grabbed my camera.

I’ve craved and yearned for a shot like that of one of my 3 and never got it.  And uhm, would you look at those thighs?!  Yummy!

the chub and the drool….oh be still my heart

Can you believe he’s 6 months old already?!  His 6 month session with his beautiful family was supposed to be this weekend but it’s just way too cold to brave it.  Soon though.  And oh yeah, his Dad turns 30 today, Happy Birthday Mike old man!

if jack could talk, he’d be all “WTH?!”

and I can’t really blame him, it was slimey in there!

i had an image in my mind and this isn’t it, but it still makes me laugh.  and just for the record, these photos are several weeks old (they’ve been in my blog que for awhile) and he’s totally forgotten about me for stripping him down and sticking him in a slimey old pumpkin.  whew!  it’s a good thing babies don’t hold grudges or i’d be in big trouble.

a few more from our little fall session to celebrate him turning 3 months old….

love this one of Jack & Mike….

little chubby man, i could just eat him up.  i might just have to go get a jack fix now, i haven’t snuggled him in a few days!

baby jack makes me laugh | leander baby photographer

after my session this morning we ventured out (in the rain!) to the pumpkin patch with our good friends.  i must admit, we had a blast.  it was rainy and wet and much, much less stressful than last year (it was summertime hot, dusty and just horribly miserable).  last year after hearing 3 kids scream and complain for the hour drive there and back, jase and i swore it off with a “never, ever, ever again”.  i can’t remember if i blogged about it, it was ‘that’ bad.  much like seaworld.  and maybe it’s because we’ve all been cooped up with taryn’s broken arm then surgery recovery, i don’t know, but we decided to go for it today despite the rain.  i’m so glad we did!  i was a bit worried about taryn, but she had her first good day yesterday, started eating again (yay!) and we felt it would do her good to get out into the fresh air for a bit.  the pumpkin ice cream alone was worth it.  the kids had a blast, we all got muddy, especially teagan, who insisted on judging each pumpkin on it’s merit on how well he could sit on it.

and as for baby jack up there, let’s just say it’s a good thing there was a maximum, cause someone’s been packing on the lbs.   😉

jack at 10 weeks | baby photographer in austin tx

It seems like just yesterday I posted Jack’s newborn photos…(yes, I’m a slacker, it WAS yesterday)…and here he is, already 10 weeks old!!  I haven’t had nearly enough snuggle time with him lately and when the crew came over this morning for a little craft get together, I stripped him down and took off to photograph him.  Heaven.  A big chubby bubba ball of heaven.

I have to say it.  I love his moobs.  I do.  They crack me up.  Teagan had moobs, he still does, and they make me laugh.  Chub-o.

He did great when I was in front of him, but a few minutes after I stood over him and he got a good look at my 24-70 mm staring back at him close range from above, he wasn’t such a fan of the camera anymore.  This one makes me laugh so hard, that lip is priceless.  Funny little man….

Right after this I scooped him up and snuggled him.  He immediately smiled at me and started baby talking, we were friends again LOL!

It’s tough work being this cute.  It wasn’t long after we returned to the crafting toddlers and his mommy that he totally crashed on the couch…O.U.T.

Man I miss the days of leaving Teagan on the couch and having his stay there!!  When he woke up he talked and babbled and smiled and told me all kinds of great stories, just full of smiles and coo’s.  I love having a baby in our house.  After last week, I was a little worried he wasn’t a fan of the camera (or me!), but today, I got him 🙂

this little stinker bug | austin baby photographer

has been saving all his smiles for his momma.  he’s holding out on me.  i mean, come on now jack, i got more smiles at 3 days old! but at 2 months old, this is all i get?!?!?

ppppffffftttt!  i’ll forgive him because 1) he snuggled right up to me friday night and 2) he’s a delicious smelling, chubby little man and 3) he had just gotten his 2 mo shots a few hours earlier.

it’s ok, i’m gonna get him.  i’m on a mission now.

and i just totally realized that i never came back to share his newborn photos….bad blogger…..I promised that weeks ago! i’ll make up for it by sharing his gorgeous birth announcements too, they just came in last week and i love them!

lookin’ good little man | austin baby photographer

just one this morning of sweet baby jack.  he got all dressed up for the tea party last night too.

Can you believe he’s 6 weeks old already?!  His little comb over hair totally cracks me up.  And this reminds me that I never came back and shared more of his newborn photos before we left for vacation!  I will do that this week!!  I have a ton to share!

The kids really had so much fun last night, between the tea party, exploring the beautiful park, chattering on about castles and princesses, spotting peacocks and running from pond to pond looking for fish and turtles, they were on cloud 9.  It was a great way to spend the evening and what may very well be one of my last full weekends off until January (crazy!).  Well, except for when Taryn has surgery.

Ty and I are off this afternoon to brave the crowds during texas tax free weekend to pick up just a few more things for school.  Starts tomorrow.  Along with it, a new schedule.  I’m ready.
