homeschool robot week

Every week I think “this week is my favorite”, but Robot week, wins, hand down!  The best part of this week was watching my kids light up when I told them I bought a bunch of old appliances from Goodwill for them to disassemble and repurpose in to robots.  An old VCR, an old clock radio, a remote control, a coffee pot and a old game controller, all for $20 and we harvested a ton of parts and pieces.  They loved every minute of taking the appliances apart – they were fascinated.  When you add in that we were totally geeking out that Storybots regrammed Taryn’s Storybot artwork, it was the best week yet!  Any week that we have a lot of Storybots is a great week, Jonah is obsessed!

homeschool camping week | personal iphoneography

camping theme homeschool

This week was about one of our favorite things:  camping!  Actually, it was more like 2 weeks since we ventured out for some real life experiences in a cabin on the Frio River.  We always have a blast there and I took over 1,000 photos with my real camera (coming soon).  Instead of our usual sensory bin, we opted this week to do camping scenes that we made out of paper and other manipulatives.  I love that as the week went on they grew and changed and were moved all around.  Taryn and Jude also painted story stones.  You can see a video of Taryn telling part of her story using stones here.  I think Jonah’s favorite was the pretend campfire Taryn and I set up for him in the living room.  Complete with cotton ball marshmallows.  It was great practice for the real thing just a few days later.  I love that homeschooling gives us the flexibility to get out in to the world more.  To go, do, see, touch, travel and explore.

preschool weather week

We had so much fun with weather week that we stretched it out to last 2 weeks.  We had a ton of stuff to learn and explore and it just wouldn’t fit in to one week.  That’s one of my favorite things about learning at home, we can bend and adjust to what the kids are most interested in.  We bought a rain gauge and use it all the time now.

Space week was a blast but sort of a repeat for us as we spent several months studying space last school year.  We added in some fun preschool stuff for Jonah to spice it up a bit.  He really loved the big planet space magnets, those were a hit!

preschool easter weekWe had a wonderful week celebrating our Lord’s resurrection.  The kids really loved the cross paintings and the resurrection eggs (that I found on sale, score!).  We hosted an Easter egg hunt with friends that was allergy friendly and had a blast, so it was a busy week.

preschool dinosaur week

Hands down, their (and my) favorite part of dinosaur week was the frozen egg project.  It was actually surprisingly easy to get little dinosaurs in to tiny water balloons.  The kids loved using water droppers to excavate the dinosaurs out.  It took awhile but they were interested and it kept them busy, win win!  And we all spent the week with Storybots dinosaur songs stuck in our head!  And the dino park with homeschool friends was a blast too.

train week – homeschool preschool | personal iphoneography

preschool train weekMy kids had a blast during train week.  Hands down, their favorite thing, was using trains to paint.  We put paint on our paper and then used the wheels of the trains to run it across the paper.  The paintings were all so different and the kids had a blast with it.  They also loved their conductor uniforms and the ride in to Austin on the metro.  Definitely a fun week for us!  Even Ty joined in by setting up different train track areas in the house for the little kids.

homeschool ocean week | personal

ocean homeschool preschool

This week was all about fish and oceans.  We did a lot of art projects, personal water bottle aquariums, paper bag jelly fish and the Austin Aquarium with homeschool friends.  About 30 seconds after we walked in the aquarium Taryn puts her hand in the water (allowed and encouraged), a blowfish bites her finger! She pulls her hand out,the fish didn’t let go and comes flying out of the water and hits the ground. Taryn is crying hysterically because her finger hurts and it scared her, the fish is flopping all around on the floor, crazy! A worker walks over, scoops up the fish and plops it back in the water and walks off, didn’t even ask if T was ok. Very bizarre. She shook it off and had a great time with friends otherwise. Especially in the bird exhibit when the birds landed on her. I’d have freaked out because birds are my own personal version of hell, but she loved that part.

farm homeschool preschool

Farm week was a big one for us.  For some reason I have a lot of farm stuff in my homeschool stash.  Plus the crafts and the field trip to Pioneer Farms, we had a blast!  I struggled with items to put in our E letter box, but a quick post on Instagram and followers came to my rescue with a few suggestions!  I added an envelope and an eraser after I took the pic.  We really enjoyed our field trip, but it was COLD.  We only made it about 1/2 around the farm in over an hour but I was impressed the kids lasted as long as they did.  We will definitely go back now that it’s warmed up and will take Jason with us.

homeschool valentines day

This week was all about love.  We made valentines day mailboxes from Michael’s and the kids loved filling them with little love notes to each other all week.  I also put together a ring of paint chips to help teach Jonah his colors each week.  I love this project, it was FREE!  Free paint chips and a binder ring from the junk drawer…viole!

homeschool preschool fire safety week | iphoneography

This week was all about fire trucks and fire safety.  Taryn and Jude completed the fire safety books and really enjoyed it.  I’m also including photos of our letter boxes that I forgot to include with last weeks post.  They have been a huge hit so far this year.  Since then I’ve added in color boxes and he loves those too.  Our trip to the fire station was a bust due to the station’s scheduling issues….but we will finally get to go on Monday with a big homeschool group!
